Objective and Content

Urban archaeology does not only supervise excavations performed in the city but also contributes to the memory and the daily life of the city dweller with findings in the form of historical documents and excavations. The recent rapid urban transformations and the tabula rasa discourse in architecture have destructive effects on urban memory, thereforeit is of utmost necessity to position urban archaeology as an important agendum. We believe that this is possible by enriching the perception of memory and time by researching historical and archaeological findings and displaying them for the public eye.

Chamber of Architects Istanbul Metropolitan Branch (TMOBB), Association of Archaeologists in Turkey Istanbul Branch, Chamber of City Planners Istanbul Branch jointly initiated a series of workshops in line with this purpose. The objective of the workshops are beyond supervised excavations, to develop ‘Urban Archaeology’ as a field focusing on the understanding of historical processes of the city, how to preserve and exhibit archaeological assets as well as how to make it part of the city. One last objective is to create a common language amongst the three participating disciplines in Urban Archaeology, namely archaeology, architecture and city planning.
